Fresh off the record-setting solar weekend in Germany, the country's transmission operators say plans are in the works for a huge transmission line buildout to accommodate growing wind power resources.


The goal is to build 3800 kilometers (more than 2300 miles) of high-voltage lines—2100 km direct current lines and 1700 alternating current lines—stretching from the Baltic coast in the south to the North Sea, which is already home to a few offshore turbines (and the government wants about 10 gigawatts of offshore wind installed by 2022 in order to help meet the country's renewable energy goals). Bekaert and Xinsteel Break Ground for...

Bekaert and Xinsteel broke ground for a new production plant in Xinyu, Jiangxi Province, China.   The new plant, called Bekaert (Xinyu) New Materials Co., Ltd., will be located in Jiangxi Xinyu High-Tech Industrial Park Development Zone and will cover 75 000 m². It will house the spring wire manufacturing platform which is now located in two separate factories.


The plant is expected to come into operation in the third quarter of 2013, and will serve domestic customers mainly, with spring wires for various applications.

The Board of Directors of the IWCS, in keeping with considerable feedback from the exhibitors in the Annual IWCS International Cable·Connectivity Symposium, has concluded that the exhibitor hours normally scheduled for the last day of the conference should be cancelled.

Production at Chinese copper fabricators has slowed this year due to higher costs and financing issues, according to a report released Tuesday by Beijing Antaike, the state-owned metals research firm.


Citing recently released data from the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, Antaike analysts noted that production of semi-fabricated copper products peaked last year at 10.28 million mt. Semi-fabricated copper production in January-February 2012 totaled 1.58 million mt, up nearly 18.75% from January-February 2011, but the pace is slowing, Antaike said.

27 Workers Laid Off at Davis Wire; Layoffs are Illegal and Retaliatory, Teamsters Say.  Workers at the Davis Wire mill in Kent (S 194th St & 80th Ave S.) went on strike early this morning in response to mass layoffs and other unlawful actions by the company. Picket lines were established at 6AM.

General Cable Corporation announced that it has agreed to acquire Alcan Cable, the wire and cable business of Rio Tinto plc. The purchase price is $185 million in cash, subject to customary adjustments primarily related to working capital levels at closing as provided in the definitive purchase agreement. The Company expects to use its Asset Based Revolving Credit Facility to principally fund the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2012, subject to receipt of regulatory approval.
