China Extends $1 Billion Loan to Ethi...

China has extended a $1 billion loan to Ethiopia for building of transmission lines linking its capital Addis Ababa with Africa's biggest hydropower dam under construction on the Nile.

The country looks to emerge as one of the world's leading power exporters and has investment plans of $12 billion to harness energy from the rivers running off its rugged highlands. It has plans for generation of over 40,000 MW of hydropower over the next two decades.

The centrepiece of the projects in the Horn of Africa country is the $4.1 billion Grand Renaissance Dam in the western Benishangul-Gumuz region, which is designed to generate 6,000 MW upon completion.

IWCS 2013 Abstract Deadline Extended

Responding to the request of several authors, the deadline for abstract submittal has been extended to May 15, 2013. Immediately following the revised deadline of May 15 the abstracts will be considered for inclusion in the 2013 IWCS Technical Symposium by the Symposium Committee of peers, so there can be no further extensions.

 

Abstracts must be submitted through the IWCS website, www.iwcs.org   Abstract requirements and submittal instructions may be found on the website.

French multinational cable manufacturer Nexans has won a $14m contract by the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) to supply a high voltage power cable system that will help the Beijing Electric Power Corporation support the future development and extension of the power transmission infrastructure in China’s capital city.

Two industry partners are proposing to carry wind-generated electricity from  Wyoming's southwest corner to the Las Vegas area on a 950-mile transmission  line.

 

Duke Energy and American Transmission Co. are teaming up to build the $3.5  billion Zephyr Project power line through Utah.

 

The companies are working with Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy, which is  seeking to build hundreds of wind turbines on 234 square miles near Chugwater,  Wyo., and export the power.

 

American Transmission says it hasn't sought regulatory approvals yet.
