Davis-Standard, LLC is pleased to announce the appointment of Todd Pearson to the position of Managing Director – Europe.

Pearson will be responsible for managing Davis-Standard operations in Europe, Russia and the Middle East, overseeing efforts to identify, create and deliver value for Davis-Standard customers. He has also been appointed Managing Director of Davis-Standard’s German subsidiary ER-WE-PA GmbH.

Arctic Fibre Inc., which is proposing to lay a 15,600-kilometre fibre optic cable through the Northwest Passage from Tokyo to London, is engaged in talks with Chinese carriers to extend the network to Shanghai, the company’s chief executive officer Doug Cunningham said.

Adding Shanghai to the network would allow the Toronto-based company to tap the commercial centre of the world’s second-largest economy, adding a populous market to one that so far includes some of the most sparsely populated communities. Mr. Cunningham declined to say which or how many Chinese entities he was in discussions with.

Nexans has won a power umbilical contract from OneSubsea for ExxonMobil’s Julia oil field project in deep-water Gulf of Mexico. The French cable specialist will integrate power cables and umbilical services in a single cross- section to be deployed at water depths in excess of 2,000 meters to tieback the Julia oil field development to subsea production facilities.

Anixter International Inc. reported that its second-quarter net income rose 5 percent as sales increased for the electrical and electronic wire and cable business. But earnings missed analysts' expectations, and the shares declined in afternoon trading.

The company, which distributes communication and security products, electrical and electronic wire and cable, fasteners and other small parts, earned $46.1 million, or $1.40 per share, for the period ended June 28. That's up from $43.9 million, or $1.28 per share, a year earlier.

Steelmakers Raise Prices on China’s E...

Chinese steelmakers including Hebei Iron & Steel Group and Jiangsu Shagang Group Co. joined their Japanese peers in raising prices after Premier Li Keqiang signaled China may support economic growth.

Shagang, the nation’s biggest non-state-owned mill, raised steel wire prices on July 21 by as much as 100 yuan ($16) a metric ton, according to its website. It was the Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province-based steelmaker’s second increase this month. Hebei Steel, China’s biggest producer, raised some steel sheet prices yesterday by as much as 100 yuan for August delivery after cutting them a month earlier, according to industry researchers Custeel.com and Mysteel.com.
