China is spending at least $100 billion on a power grid of 20 ultra high-voltage transmission lines meant to link power generation in western areas to load centers in the south and east.

The State Grid Corp. of China plans to build about 12,000 miles of ultra high-voltage transmission lines by 2017. Reuters reported that some analysts have priced the transmission grid project as high as $250 billion.

The company has built more than 2,800 miles of line, with another 3,900 miles under construction. China's National Development and Reform Commission has approved the remaining 5,400 miles of transmission line, according to the company.

Operating rates at aluminum wire and cable producers in China averaged 74.19% in July, 1.45 percentage points higher than June, according to a survey by Shanghai Metals Market (SMM). This is driven by an increase in raw material inventories and order books brought by growing investment in power grid construction.

Investment in power grid construction in China hit 28.7 billion yuan in July, up 4.1% year-on-year. Nexans Wins EUR120M Contract From Sco...

Nexans has been awarded a €120m contract by SSE, Scottish Hydro Electric,  to supply and install a subsea link between the Kintyre peninsula and the mainland coast in south-west Scotland.

The transmission upgrade, which is part of SSE’s wider plans to invest up to €6bn in its network between now and 2021, will release up to 150MW of additional grid capacity for renewable projects.

The French company will create a twin 230kV and 240MVA subsea cable link from a new substation on the peninsula. The project includes the supply and installation of two 41km three-core submarine cables along with six 5km single-core underground cables for the land element.

Indonesia may lose three-quarters of its power cable makers in the next two to three years as thin margins drive weaker players to accept buyouts, leaving a handful of larger companies to feed the fast-growing economy's electricity demand.

Cable industry revenues in Southeast Asia's biggest economy rose to around $2.5 billion last year, up 20 percent from a year earlier but still tiny compared with larger emerging market such as China or India.

Tata Steel Thailand, a major steel producer, reports it foresees a high demand for its products due to the country’s planned $ 70 billion investment in major infrastructure projects.

Tata Steel Thailand (TSTH) President Peeyush Gupta said if the ambitious infrastructure projects were approved, his company “will stand to gain as all these projects need steel and cement“.  “We will have two and a half years worth of extra demand being created over a period of seven years,” he announced.  Gupta said Thailand was a good market to make steel as domestic scrap was available.

Japan’s copper wire and cable shipments increased 3.8 percent in July from a year earlier to the highest level since November as demand from the construction and electric-machinery industries gained, an industry group reported.

Shipments totaled 61,800 metric tons last month, compared with 59,533 tons a year earlier, the Japanese Electric Wire & Cable Makers’ Association said today in a statement. Deliveries were 54,087 tons in June, down 5.6 percent from a year earlier.

Japan’s overall exports jumped by the most since 2010 in July, aiding Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s efforts to drive an economic recovery even as rising energy costs boosted the trade deficit. The ...
