The $250 million undersea fiber-optic cable project that will add capacity to the growing Internet traffic between Asia and the U.S. mainland -- via Guam and Honolulu -- has started, GTA Teleguam and its partners announced last week.

Guam's GTA is a partner in the consortium of international companies that is investing in the project.  "GTA is excited about this consortium," stated Robert Haulbrook, GTA president and chief executive officer, in a press release.

"With this system, collectively, we are well positioned to meet the growing demand for increased bandwidth and strengthening our position to enhance overall network redundancy," he added.

Siemens develops a gas-insulated transmission line for carrying large amounts of energy at high DC voltages. Eastern Bavarian Technical University Regensburg, Berlin Technical University and Dresden University of Applied Sciences, among others, are working under the lead management of Siemens on developing a new gas-insulated DC transmission line known as the DC CTL (Compact Transmission Line for Direct-Current High Voltage) for laying underground.

The new line is designed to transmit up to five gigawatts (GW) of power per system. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) is providing €3.78 million in this development project.

The Statoil operated Gullfaks gas field in the Norwegian Sea will rely on Nexans’ innovative power umbilicals combining power, fiber-optic and hydraulic lines in a single cross section. The cables were successfully handed over to Statoil this month.

The subsea gas compression station will be installed on the seafloor at the Gullfaks Sør satellite field, 15 km from the Gullfaks C platform. It will increase total gas extraction by 22 million barrels.

The cables will power two five-megawatt gas compressors at a depth of 135 metres. The 650 tonne station will be housed in a 420 tonne protective structure, managing a flow rate of 10 million cubic metres per day.
