The 2017 Wiring Harness Manufacturers Association (WHMA) Annual Conference is scheduled for February 27-March 2 in San Antonio. The Marriott Riverwalk will serve as conference headquarters.

A true highlight of this year’s event will be the keynote presentation made by Joe Theismann.  He is an entrepreneur and the former star quarterback for the Washington Redskins.  He spent the last two decades working for ESPN on their NFL broadcasts, and the NFL Network. His keynote talk is titled, “Game Plan for Success”. This is a session that cannot be missed.

China to Help Build 4,000 MW Power Tr...

China would invest $1.5 billion in HVDC (High Voltage, Direct Current) Transmission Line between Matiari and Lahore.

An agreement to this effect was signed in Beijing between Secretary Water and Power Mohammad Younus Dagha and Chairman State Grid of China. The transmission line will link north-south National Grid with a capacity to transmit 4,000MWs. It will be the first such high capacity transmission line in Pakistan.

Construction will begin in January, and should take about 20 months, said a spokesman for the Pakistani prime minister’s office.  Pakistan has been plagued by a shortage of electricity for years, with widespread rolling blackouts in both rural and urban areas.

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), has recently signed a contract with Nexans for power cables. The contract, worth approximately € 300 million, includes Low and Medium Voltage cables to be used in civil infrastructure projects in Qatar. Through the contract, Nexans will help in meeting the growing demands for energy and facilitating infrastructure development while supplying the cables in Qatar. The supply of cables will connect substations to various infrastructures-oriented projects across Doha and its suburbs such as Doha New Port, Qatar Rail and Metro projects as well as projects needed for 2022 FIFA World cup.

Huawei Marine Networks has awarded Nexans the contract to supply 6000 km of their second generation submarine Repeatered Optical Cables (ROC) for Phase II of the National Broadband Network (“NBNII”) project linking Cameroon and Brazil. This project will be Nexans’ first intercontinental project and will help to meet the growing data connectivity needs of the African and South American continents.

The cable system will be manufactured and tested at Nexans’ Rognan factory in Norway with delivery completed by end of 2017.

US Wire and cable manufacturer Southwire has acquired material lift manufacturer Sumner Manufacturing from owner Rob Collins. Carrollton, Georgia based Southwire claims to be North America’s largest manufacturer of wire and cable and the third largest worldwide. The acquisition includes Sumner’s manufacturing operations and corporate support functions in Houston and Langfang, China, as well as its direct sales and distribution operations in Canada, the UK and the Netherlands. Sumner’s 160 employees remain with the company, and its manufacturing facilities will be integrated into Southwire's business operations.

SACE and SIMEST and BNP Paribas Corporate & Institutional Banking (CIB) announce the finalisation of export financing of $519 million for National Grid North America, a company of the National Grid Plc Group, the UK’s main electricity and gas utility company, in support of the works and supply orders awarded to Prysmian as part of the international project North Sea Link.

European telco Proximus is looking to reach 85% of enterprises and more than 50% of households with fiber.

Belgian telecommunications operator Proximus said it expects to invest 3 billion euros ($3.13 billion) over the next 10 years to accelerate deployment of fiber across the country.

The carrier said it expects to cover more than 85% of all enterprises and more than 50% of all households with fiber, with plans to fully cover dense city areas with fiber-to-the-home and fiber-to-the-premises starting with a progressive roll out in six cities – Antwerp, Brussels, Charleroi, Ghent, Namur and Roeselare – in early 2017.
