Cimteq were among the exhibitors showcasing their software products at the 30th annual event of Wire Dusseldorf earlier this month. As anticipated the expo was everything expected from exhibitors and delegates alike and much more. Visitor numbers were excellent and the calibre of new innovations being presented by the exhibitors was at an all-time high at the five day event. POSCO, a multinational steel producer headquartered in Pohang, South Korea, will establish operations at the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville, creating up to 60 high-wage jobs by 2018.
POSCO America will invest $19 million to construct a 136,000-square-foot facility on approximately 10 acres to process wire rod for use in the manufacture of nuts, bolts and shafts for the automotive industry. The first submarine fiber optic cable will be laid between Africa and South America in order to improve voice and data transfer between the two regions. The major telecommunication company, Cables S.A and NEC Corporation, an information technology provider, have announced a contract to lay the cable, called the South Atlantic Cable System (SACS), which will connect both continents and will begin to operate in the middle of 2018. In March of 2013, snowstorms throughout Kintyre and Arran in Scotland brought down a power line which plunged 20,000 homes into darkness. In order to avoid future blackouts, a three-year project was started to link power from the Ayrshire coast to Kintyre and the Isle of Arran to secure future energy supply, even in the case of bad weather.
For the project, Nexans supplied and installed a 41 km power link to upgrade the electricity transmission network between the Kintyre peninsula and mainland coast in Southwest Scotland. This new power link also allows an additional grid capacity for renewable projects.

Corning is to acquire optical communications device developer Alliance Fiber Optic Products. Corning is making an all-cash tender offer to acquire AFOP’s outstanding common shares at a price of $18.50 per share, representing a transaction value of around $305 million.
AFOP manufactures passive optical components, such as are used by cloud data-center operators and datacom and telecom OEMs. AFOP components are already used in several of Corning’s existing connectivity solutions. Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, AFOP has manufacturing and product development capabilities in the US, Taiwan and China.

American Electric Power is launching a $66 million investment in its infrastructure to upgrade electrical delivery service in Carroll, Tuscarawas and Harrison counties.
The project includes a new substation in northwest Harrison County called the Yager Substation and upgrades for transmission lines.
"The main driver of this is the shale natural gas industry," said Brett Schmied, project outreach specialist for Columbus-based American Electric Power. "The facilities there require a lot of power. This project will let them ramp up to that higher level of power that they want to go to. The Yager station is under construction now. "
