E-BEAM Services, Inc. has announced a major addition to its electron beam sterilization capacity with a second high-powered electron beam accelerator in Cranbury, New Jersey. This accelerator is specially designed to serve the rapidly growing demand for electron beam sterilization in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries.

This addition is timely, according to E-BEAM’s Director of Business Development, Bill Crilley, “because the number of medical devices and pharmaceuticals being validated for ISO/FDA compliant sterilization is at an all-time high for E-BEAM Services.”

Ducab Aluminium Company (DAC), an Abu Dhabi-based aluminium rod producer, plans to export most of its output as it takes advantage from the shift from copper to aluminium in industrial usage it reported.

DAC, a Dh220 million joint venture between Dubai-based copper and aluminium wire and cable producer Ducab and Abu Dhabi industrial conglomerate Senaat, was inaugurated in Khalifa Industrial Zone of Abu Dhabi (KIZAD). Strikes at the Megasa-owned Megasider Zaragoza steel bar plant have led to production cuts, meaning the group is currently missing its targets, a union spokesman told S&P Global Platts, adding that industrial action is likely to extend into February.

The unions are debating whether to increase the number of strike hours from two hours per shift, according to the spokesman for the regional branch of the Confederacion Sindical de Comisiones Obreras Union (CCOO), who declined to be named, as the two sides have failed to reach an agreement over future pay and working conditions.

Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal has announced that its Long Products Canada business unit will make investments totaling nearly CAD$70 million ($56.8 million) by 2020 into its Contrecoeur, Québec, steel production facilities.

The company indicates it will replace two reheating furnaces at its Contrecoeur-East wire rod mill (approx. CAD$30 million, or $24 million) and its Contrecoeur-West bar mill (approx. CAD$33 million, or $27 million). Work is under way on the transmission line that will connect APA Group's $220 million Darling Downs Solar Farm to the state's electricity network later this year.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said Powerlink had started construction for APA on a new 350 metre transmission line linking the  to the existing Braemar to Darling Downs transmission line.

The farm, about 45km west of Dalby, will be one of Australia's largest when it starts operating late this year. It will have about 400,000 solar panels installed over 250 hectares, generating enough renewable energy to power up to 32,000 homes.
