NEC Announces Indian Subsea Cable

NEC has been chosen to build out a subsea cable, this time between Chennai and the Indian islands of Andaman and Nicobar, after winning a contract from Indian government enterprise Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

Under the purchase order, NEC Technologies India will be responsible for designing, engineering, supplying, installing, testing, and implementing the telecommunications submarine cable system. Parent company NEC Corporation will manufacture the optical cable and assist with installation.

The 2,300km cable will land in Chennai, Rangat, Long Island, Havelock, Port Blair, Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, and Great Nicobar, with capacity to carry 100Gbps optical waves.

Bekaert S.A. is planning to close down a rubber-reinforcement products operation in Figline, which it acquired from Pirelli in late 2014.

Bekaert said the competitive position of the site had been under pressure in recent years, with "significantly higher cost structure" compared with other Bekaert plants in EMEA. While expressing regrets over the measure, Bekaert said its management could not see any other option to strengthen its market share in the European rubber reinforcement markets.

The Belgian group said June 22 that it had informed the works council of the Figline site and authorities about the decision, which will affect 318 jobs.

Pat Carney unexpectedly passed away on July 3, 2018 at his home in Naples, Florida.  Patrick spent significant time working on programs to help others-including the soup kitchen weekly, numerous fundraising events and numerous board involvement, all of his philanthropic efforts were important to him. Boating was the high point of his life and he was an active member of the Guilford Yacht Club where he served on the board, including serving as a past president. Vocus Signs With Nokia for Pacific Ca...

Vocus has signed an agreement with Nokia’s Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) to roll out the Coral Sea Cable system that will connect Australia, Papua New Guinea and the Solmon Islands.

The government announced last month it had awarded Vocus a $136.6 million contract to build the new cable system. Canberra’s support for the project is widely considered an effort to block Huawei from rolling out the cables.

The 4000-kilometre Coral Sea Cable system will land at Port Moresby, Honiara and Sydney.

Following completion — expected in late 2019 — PNG and the Solomon Islands will have 20 terabit per second connections to Australia.
