Indian Firm Invests $55m In Ethiopian...

Aarti Steel Plc today inaugurated a one billion birr ($55 million) steel producing factory in Oromia Regional State, in a somewhat unusual foreign investment in the little-known Ethiopian steel-manufacturing sector.



The factory -to be based on 40,000 square metres of land in the Galan area of Oromia state, on the outskirts of capital city Addis Ababa -is the project of Indian-based diversified manufacturing company Aarti Steel Plc; a market-leading steel producer in the Asian country.

ABB to Repair Cahora Bassa Power Link...

SWISS electrical engineering multinational ABB yesterday said it had been awarded a $50m contract to repair the Mozambique side of a 1,400km high-voltage direct-current transmission line linking the Cahora Bassa hydro plant on the Zambezi River in Tete to Johannesburg.



In 2006, Eskom contracted ABB to upgrade its Apollo converter station — the Johannesburg side of the Cahora Bassa transmission line — to raise the station’s capacity from 1,920MW to 2,500MW, and also lay the groundwork for a future upgrade to 3,960MW.

Siemens Wire Rod Mill Boosts Capacity...

Carbon product producer Hanzhong Iron & Steel Group Company, Ltd. will expand its capacity with a new wire rod mill supplied by Siemens VAI Metals Technologies. The plant will be in Ding Jun Shan Town, Mian County in Shaanxi Province, China. When commissioned, the mill will produce 600,000 tons per year. Built in collaboration with CISDI Engineering Co., Ltd., the project is expected to start up in early 2013.
