Romanian Alro Plans New Aluminum Mill...

Romanian aluminum producer Alro, owned by Vimetco, plans to add a new mill to increase capacity for aluminum wire production in response to higher demand on the US market. Even so, Alro expects a drop in the total aluminum production in 2012, due to a shortage in energy supply, and foresees lower operational revenues, down 11 percent, to some USD 639 million. Its profit expectations are also lower – down 5 percent on 2011, to some USD 71.4 million.

Yemeni Tender for 305km Transmission-...

The Public Electricity Corporation (PEC) of Yemen is calling for international contractors to bid for a major transmission-line project.


Tender No. 47/2010 stipulates a 132kV, 305km-long transmission line from Dhamar to Aden. The project has received financing from the Abu Dhabi Development Fund. The 27-month contract comprises design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning.



The individual sections for the 132kV double-circuit overhead line are:  Dhamar to Suhban, 87km - Suhban to Haoban, 53km Haoban to Al Arish, 143km - Al Arish, 7km Mansoura, 8km.

Schnitzer Steel's steelmaking segment, Cascade Steel, saw its fiscal second quarter revenues climb 21% higher year-over-year, despite continued lackluster demand for rebar and wire rod on the US West Coast.



Schnitzer Steel CEO Tamara Lundgren said Thursday during the company's earnings call that the short-term extension of the federal highway bill suggests demand isn't expected to pick up anytime soon. ”(W)e're not seeing any change in demand, assales prices and utilization remain flat,”  she said.

SEA Wire and Cable, Inc.  announced that it has received a 2011 Boeing Performance Excellence Award. The Boeing Company issues the award annually to recognize suppliers who have achieved superiorperformance.



SEA Wire and Cable reportedly maintained the aerospace manufacturer's Silver composite performance rating for each month of the 12-month performance period, from October 1, 2010, to September 30, 2011. This year, Boeing recognized 529 suppliers who achieved either a Gold or Silver level Boeing Performance Excellence Award. SEA Wire and Cable notes that it is one of only 407 suppliers to receive the Silver level of recognition.
